Creating Herbal Formulas: Metabolic Disorders

Creating Herbal Formulas: Metabolic Disorders

Description

This course is a continuation of the Creating Herbal Formulas online course series with Dr. Jillian Stansbury. This course series roughly follows Dr. Stansbury’s Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals book series, which is a compilation of her 30+ years of practice and experience in using botanical medicine in clinical practice!

Dr. Stansbury is a wealth of botanical and naturopathic knowledge and wisdom. She has a unique way of blending scientific research, folkloric understanding, and clinical application into one cohesive learning experience! Dr. Stansbury’s brain is like an encyclopedia, yet she has the ability to make her knowledge readily accessible to her students.

This course, Creating Herbal Formulas: Metabolic Disorders, focuses primarily on diabetes and metabolic syndrome and will teach you how to craft herbal formulas for improving basic metabolic function to help treat diabetes, hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, and support weight loss.  This course includes formulation tutorials for common presentations in diabetic patients including frequent infections, neuropathy, renal disease, and increased risk factors for heart disease.  Creating Herbal Formulas: Metabolic Disorders also includes a detailed review of specific materia medica options and research on molecular mechanisms of action of selected herbs.

Prepare to nerd out to botanical goodness – because this course covers a lot!

Metabolic Disorders: Overview, History, and Introduction (30 mins)

In the beginning of the course, Dr. Stansbury provides an introduction and overview, as well as statistics, on obesity and metabolic syndrome. For example, did you know that in 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 2.3 billion people were overweight with 700 million people being obese? #shocking

As you might expect, nutrition plays a critical role in metabolic disorders. And nutritional distress can put a major burden on the body and the liver, specifically. Dr. Stansbury offers some clinical pearls in working with children and adult patients who may be “picky eaters” and supporting them in making these really supportive lifestyle changes that sometimes can be really hard for your patients. Dr. Stansbury also teaches on intermittent fasting and its role in decreasing insulin resistance and decreasing oxidative stress.

Metabolic Disorders: The Role of Herbs + Medicinal Foods (1 hour 45 mins)

Dr. Stansbury then shifts to focus on the various actions and roles of herbs in metabolic disorders. She focuses on tissue protectant herbs, high mineral herbs, hypoglycemic agents, and insulin sensitizers. She also shares some of the latest in research demonstrating the potential of some herbs to actually regenerate the beta cells of the pancreas in animals. She shares those herbs and components.

How much do you know about inositol and its role in metabolic and even reproductive health? Do you know which foods are naturally high in inositol? You’ll find out with Dr. Stansbury!

Did you know that early research on Galega (Goat’s Rue) in the 1920s led to the development of the antidiabetic biguanide drugs (like Metformin)? And that Galega has a similar action without nearly as many negative side effects as biguanide drugs? Dr. Stansbury teaches you about Galega, how it works, its main components, and other clinical pearls!

Have you ever seen Stevia or Monk Fruit on a nutrition label and wondered if it was a healthy ingredient? Dr. Stansbury address both of these non-caloric sweeteners in this course!

Other things covered in this part of the course include berberine in Oregon Grape and silymarin in Milk Thistle, fiber, gut health, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), and more!!

Dr. Stansbury also shares the following example herbal formulations and recipes helping make the information provided more practical: High Chromium Summer Herbal Tea for Metabolic Support, Herbal Formula for Diabetic Retinopathy, Tincture For Chronic Infections In Diabetics, Daily Tea Formula for Diabetes and Obesity, Flor de Jamaica Tea, and Sugar-Free Hibiscus Syrup.
