Infant Sleep 101 for Medical Professionals
Infant Sleep 101 for Medical Professionals
Featured Review
Description
Infant Sleep 101 aims to normalize normal infant sleep. Using current research on attachment theory, safe sleep, and mother/infant sleep biology, we step away from cultural and historical influence and look at infant sleep from the lens of the baby. Medical professionals, especially naturopathic doctors, are well-suited to educate and inform patients of normal infant sleep before babies arrive and challenge the heavily parent-centered approaches to infant sleep that are persistent in North American society. Postnatally, there are many tools in the naturopathic toolkit that can support the health and well-being of parents while they are attending to their infant’s night needs.
Learning Objectives

- Understand the basic approaches within popular sleep training methods including their pros and cons
- Understand the basics of attachment theory as a foundation for responding to infants and their sleep needs

- Understand common definitions related to sleep including bed-sharing, co-sleeping, breast-sleeping, SIDS and SUID
- Identify measures that parents can take to ensure a safe sleep environment which should be communicated to all pre-natal and post-natal patients
- Appreciate how there are times in the first year of a baby’s life where sleep may feel more challenging and times when it may feel less challenging
- Understand your role as a health care provider
- Identify supportive measures for parents to help them manage their own sleep needs while they are supporting their infant’s biological needs at night

Laura's passion for the environment, global health, and maternal and newborn care led her down her path to become a Naturopathic Doctor and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). After completing a Bachelors degree in psychology, she went on study Naturopathic Medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) in Toronto. It was during that time she was introduced to Dr. Jack Newman's International Breastfeeding Centre and the amazing work they do to help families achieve their breastfeeding goals. Realizing Lactation medicine was the missing piece she was looking for in her training and understanding the value of qualified lactation support, she decided to enroll and complete the necessary steps to become an IBCLC.
Laura’s clinical focus in her private practice is with families in the postpartum period, supporting their transition into parenthood, guiding them with feeding support, and promoting infant mental health. She has done extra training in the areas of infant mental health and infant sleep which comes up frequently with her patients. She teaches online with BeboMia in their Breastfeeding Educator Certification and also runs short continuing education courses for Naturopathic Doctors. Laura loves to explore the world and currently calls Toronto home where she lives with her husband and their two young children. She sees patients part-time and volunteers as a Technical Advisor with Nurture Project International who support safe infant feeding in refugee and IDP camps.
