Peri-Menopause and Menopause: Back to Basics
Featured Review
Description
A great deal of functional medicine study has gone to menopausal women regarding hormone replacement (HRT) as there are 700 million plus women in the US going through this change. While hormone imbalance can occur at any age, menopausal is typically thought to occur between 45-55 years old with the average woman starting at 51 years old. The symptoms range from anxiety and insomnia to hot flashes, joint pain, weight gain, and bone loss. There is no one-size-fits-all approach however this presentation will help identify the most commonly reported hormone imbalances in the menopausal women and help address evidence-based treatment options with lifestyle changes, nutrients, vitamins, and herbs that may or may not include hormones for better health optimization. Cases will be discussed.
Learning Objectives
- Review and understand how the HPO axis works
- Understand the common dysfunctions associated with each hormone (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone)
- Be able to implement both hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options into patient care for a more integrative approach
