Diseases of the Drugs: Deprescribing of the Drugs
Diseases of the Drugs: Deprescribing of the Drugs
Featured Review
Description
Every naturopathic doctor is required to successfully complete comprehensive pharmacology training in the naturopathic medical school curriculum. Many licensed naturopathic doctors are also required to complete hours of continuing education specifically in pharmacy to renew their license. Naturopathic training has focused extensively in the prescribing of drugs, with the respective appropriate drug choice, dosing, and frequency, all while also avoiding interactions and contraindications.
Deprescribing is not really taught well – indeed, rarely taught at all – and this continuing education series is intended to support the naturopathic doctor, where indicated, appropriate, and within their scope of practice, to safely wean their patients off of their prescribed medications.
Focusing on main diseases seen across all body systems. the Deprescribing of the Drugs online continuing education series follows the same structure as Christie Fleetwood’s Diseases of the Drug: Organ Systems series. In Diseases of the Drugs: Deprescribing of the Drugs, Dr. Fleetwood will look at the same Top 100 Drugs in Sales, the same Top 100 Drugs in Volume, and the same diseases for which these drugs are used. However, in this course, she will now do so with a focus on treating those disease states from a vitalistic, naturopathic standpoint. Because once the patient is healthy enough and no longer in a compensated state, it becomes clear — through both subjective and objective measures — that the patient is, in fact, actually overmedicated! This series is designed to help the practitioner know how to safely remove the drugs in question.
The Diseases of the Drugs: Deprescribing of the Drugs series is broken up into 5 lessons, each focusing on a specific organ system in a 2 hour pre-recorded video:
- Lesson 1: GI, GU systems and Immune system part 1: how to treat GERD, IBS-D, chronic constipation; ED, BPH, over-active bladder; bacterial and viral infections. What to consider when the patient comes to you already on these drugs; how to monitor both subjective and objective parameters for safety; which drugs, when the patient is found to be overmedicated, may be abruptly discontinued, and which ones require tapering.
- Lesson 2: Cardiovascular system: how to treat hypertension, dyslipidemia, DMII, arrhythmias, angina, blood clotting disorders. What to consider when the patient comes to you already on these drugs; how to monitor both subjective and objective parameters for safety; which drugs, when the patient is found to be overmedicated, may be abruptly discontinued, and which ones require tapering.
- Lesson 3: Nervous system part 1 and Immune system part 2: how to treat ADD/ADHD, dementia, chronic pain (non-auto-immune), sleep disorders, smoking cessation, and Multiple Sclerosis. What to consider when the patient comes to you already on these drugs; how to monitor both subjective and objective parameters for safety; which drugs, when the patient is found to be overmedicated, may be abruptly discontinued, and which ones require tapering.
- Lesson 4: Respiratory system: how to treat allergies, asthma, COPD. What to consider when the patient comes to you already on these drugs; how to monitor both subjective and objective parameters for safety; which drugs, when the patient is found to be overmedicated, may be abruptly discontinued, and which ones require tapering.
- Lesson 5: Nervous system part 2 and Immune system part 3: how to treat depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, (PTSD—bonus!), and auto-immune disorders (RA, UC, Crohn’s, psoriasis, mixed-connective tissue disorder, Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism). What to consider when the patient comes to you already on these drugs; how to monitor both subjective and objective parameters for safety; which drugs, when the patient is found to be overmedicated, may be abruptly discontinued, and which ones require tapering.
Come and join Naturopathic Doctor and Registered Pharmacist, Dr. Christie Fleetwood, as she provides for a fabulous blend of pharmacology, deprescribing methods, vitalistic philosophy, and wholism delivered with Docere to walk step-by-step up the Therapeutic Order starting with the very foundation of our medicine (the Vis Medicatrix Naturae and Primum Non Nocere), to re-visit how to Tolle Totum by Tolle Causam! This way of practice brings the patient back to radically vibrant health (full circle, back to Praevenire), which means their drugs will necessarily need removal (or at least drastic reduction)!

Instructor
I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University, in 1988. After practicing as a retail pharmacist in the greater Richmond area for a decade, I attended Bastyr University, earning a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine in 2004. Because of my unique education and training, I understand both conventional medicine as well as natural forms of healing. And because I’ve been asked to teach on pharmacology/pharmacy related topics to my beloved naturopathic profession, I study them constantly, going deeper into the intricacies and nuances of the agents and uncovering some astonishing information that I think YOU (and your patients/clients) would benefit from knowing!
