Genomic Medicine: A Mini Course
Featured Review
Description
This short 2 hour mini-course is broken into 2 basic sections. The first covers essential elements of how to evaluate and understand genomic medicine research studies and the second goes into some recent, relevant, and fascinating genomic medicine trials. In our introduction video you will review the basics of genetic, how polymorphisms may effect health, some of the common types of genomic medicine studies, and some pros and cons of this type of research. We then explore how to evaluate a genomic medicine research paper so you don’t get duped by overzealous lab reps or abstracts. We go over the three main domains of review including the types of bias to look for, the size of the effect, and finally application to your patient. After this background we review some fascinating new research on ApoE and Kif6 and their association with heart attacks. We cover a fascinating paper that looks at genetic risk profiles as opposed to specific SNPs to predict cardiovascular risk. We look at a possible “placebo response gene” and then end with a couple papers on MTHFR.
Learning Objectives
- Understand basic genetic and how this new field of medicine may impact your practice
- Learn and key common genomic medicine study type.
- Critically evaluate genomic medicine studies by identifying bias, evaluating effect size, and applying it to your patient.
- Understand the cardiovascular disease association between the SNPs ApoE, Kif6, and MTHFR.
- Consider how polymorphisms may impact the placebo effect.

Dr. Goldenberg is a passionate educator and currently is adjunct professor at Bastyr University, his alma mater, in which he enrolled after receiving honors and distinction in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania. He is also faculty for the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine’s Interprofessional Fellowship in Integrative Health and Medicine, where he teaches evidence informed practice.
Dr. Goldenberg is an active researcher with numerous publications in high impact scientific journals such as Annals of Internal Medicine and The Cochrane Library. His research focus includes evidence informed practice, irritable bowel syndrome, probiotics, and research methodology. He is currently Research Investigator at the Bastyr University Research Institute and Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Technology Sydney. He has presented nationally and internationally on evidence based medicine as well as probiotics and research methodology.
